Cynthia Arndell

As a native New Mexican and volunteer for organizations serving vulnerable populations,Cynthia is acutely aware of the adverse impact of poverty on our communities.  She received both her BSN and MD degrees through the University of  New Mexico. Throughout her career as a nurse and physician, Cynthia cared for underserved populations  in the UNM Healthcare system. As a faculty physician and professor, she took a lead role in  developing an interdisciplinary curriculum for medical and other health professions students addressing the social determinants of population health (SDOH). Dr. Arndell retired from  her fulltime career in 2024. Recently, she has been recruited to work parttime in the medical clinics for the state prison system. Given her depth of knowledge in SDOH and work experience, Dr. Arndell understands the profound impact of education in, not only, reducing inmate recidivism, but also, in breaking the cycle of poverty. She is honored to be selected as a Gordon Bernell board member and excited to help move our mission forward.
